The cold front is through western Kentucky and has stalled over western Tennessee. Cooler air has already begun filtering into the region. The main shot of cooler air will arrive by Friday night and Saturday with clearing skies. But the big news is in space and a geomagnetic storm that will impact earth by tomorrow and Saturday. Among space weather forecasters, confidence is building that Earths magnetic field will receive a double-blow from a pair of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on Sept. 12th. This is expected to disrupt radio and satellite transmissions. The two storm clouds were propelled in our direction by explosions on the sun in the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2158 on Sept. 9th and 10th. Strong geomagnetic storms are possible on Sept. 12th and 13th as a result of the consecutive impacts. Sky watchers, even those at mid-latitudes, should be alert for auroras (also known as the northern lights) in the nights ahead.
