The commissioner of the NFL was just grilled by the media in a brutal 45 minute press conference. Thats fine. He deserves it. The NFL is a private organization and they can do what they want when it comes to suspending employees for conduct problems, but, yes, I think they should be held to a high standard. There are plenty of companies out there who dont necessarily fire their associates over domestic abuse allegations, but thats what we want from this company, and OK, I get it. Obviously Im as outraged as anyone about domestic abuse -- which is why Ive written twice about it -- but I do think the frenzied fire everyone! mob mentality can be dangerous. And I do think its unfair when we harp only on the criminals in the NFL and never even mention, for instance, the Bengals who are paying a player just to sit on the bench so he can afford treatment for his cancer-stricken daughter, or the Ravens player who just retired from the game so he could donate a kidney to his brother, or the many, many athletes who do incredible work in their communities. But, alright, that doesnt negate the bad things. Im with you on that. Still, Im watching the press conference and all I could think is that the Obama administration -- you know, the institution which, rather than running a game, actually runs the whole country -- has never once, in seven years, in spite of dozens of crimes and scandals, faced this sort of critical onslaught from the mass media. Whens the last time they made Obama sweat during a news conference? Forced an apology? Asked probing questions? Called him on his lies? Never. It never happens. Yet we do it with a dude who runs a football league. Our priorities are so out of whack, its ridiculous.
