The common measures of what constitutes middle class vary - TopicsExpress

The common measures of what constitutes middle class vary significantly among cultures or nations. Nevertheless, to say a middle class person as one who drives a Mercedes-Benz, owns a bungalow, and has assets worth RM2-3 million is just nonsensical and plain stupid. To contradict Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi’s shallow description, I would define middle-class in Malaysia as the socioeconomic class between the working class and the upper class, usually including professionals and highly skilled labourers who drive Saga BLM, own a single-storey house with maximum three bedrooms and can afford to eat BigMac at Mcdonald only bila time gaji (Bukan time gaji makan Mychef dishes beli kat Tesco Seri Alam). From a middle-class man’s perspective, anyone driving a Mercedes and living in a bungalow can’t be regarded as middle-class at all. As a matter of fact, it is called “filthy rich” or “kaya giler babi”… p/s: I have a friend who actually lives in a 11-bedroom bungalow on a hill but drives an old rusty KELISA around instead of a E-segment car. I guess he is just as poor as the rest of us..
