The complexion of the results released so far still shows the prime importance of ethnic politics in our electoral process. Aregbe won at home comfortably so with his distant rival Omisore. When will the electorate decide who wins an election solely on the basis of pedigree and performance? I think we are yet to take off democratically. Issues like religion, ethnic background and some other inane considerations are what the masses evaluate before deciding who wins their vote. As expected, the peoples choice is coasting home to victory based on the handful of results released so far. The results, I must say, show that the people did not bow to the initial intimidation orchestrated by the security agencies purportedly providing security for the election as commanded by the PDP-led FG. For me, it shows that where a popular candidate who has performed creditably well stands for an election, no army of occupation can defeat him. This is where Aregbe towers far and above his colleague in Ekiti state. Apart from his commendable performance, forgive his occasional excesses, Ogbeni also connects with the masses very well. He understands the language and signs of local politics. Hopefully, and as INEC declares him the eventual winner of the election, it is my hope that Ogbeni surpasses his modest achievements in his first term in his second coming. More importantly, the imminent victory of Aregbe shows that the Yoruba race is not ready to allow some shady characters rule over the affairs of the region.. But then, I must sound this not of warning very seriously: the APC must not take the people of the region for granted so with the people. All we want is genuine development in terms of human and material progress. Shame to those who wanted to bring the locusts to the region and their active foreign collaborators...
