The concept of true goodness (Birr) or the essence of it - TopicsExpress

The concept of true goodness (Birr) or the essence of it manifested in someone who does the following things. The first 3 points are also motivation for goodness. [Importance decreases with the sequence]. 1. Believes in Allah. 2. Believes in the Last day/Afterlife. 3. Believes in Angels, Book & Prophets [i.e. the Message which the Angels bring as books and is delivered by Prophets] [Book is singular since we need to follow Quran not the previous revelations which have been changed]. {Point 1,2 & 3, foundation; cannot be seen} 4. Charity; a means of cleansing greed. Spending from what one loves to those who are close e.g. family, orphans near them, people stuck in poverty and cannot help themselves, travellers, those who ask for it, imprisoned and in debt. 5. Establish Salah/Prayer. 6. Give Zakat. {Point 5 & 6 is a figure of speech in the Quran which represents all laws in Islam. Because e.g. for Prayer to be accepted you need Halal income & food, purity, intention etc.} 7. Fulfillers of promises whenever they make mutual promises. [Obligations of the promises need to be very clear] Needs to be a collective effort. 8. Perseverance & Patience in times of conflict. Sticking with above points in times of great difficulty. These people are truthful people and are able to protect themselves. - Sura Bakarah, Rough summary of the Ayat of Birr.
