The conclusion, so far as those individualists go, is simple, but oh so hopeful: “knowledge,” they found, “dampened the negative influence of individualist ideology on belief in climate change.” What follows, they write, is that it’s “likely” that knowledge “can play a significant and constructive role in climate change discourse,” as “education about the science of human-caused climate change would counteract the impact of ideologies on climate change beliefs.” There’s even the suggestion, they further venture, that “possessing factual information on the issue can neutralize the bias of individualistic ideology on climate change opinion.” (Unfortunately, this effect didn’t hold for hierarchists — people who supported statements like “we have gone too far in pushing equal rights in the country,” and who generally support social stratification. When such people thought they knew a lot about climate change, that inflated sense of knowledge only served to reinforce their ideological beliefs. Thus, they were less likely to accept that climate change is happening.)
