The condition results usually from a combination of causes and contributing factors. They include: - Genetics: our genes affect how fat is distributed in our body and how much is stored. It may also play a role in how the body turns food into energy and how it is burned up during exercise. - Sedentary Lifestyle: if you are inactive, you don’t burn many calories. You in fact take in more calories. - Family lifestyle: Apart from genetics, similar eating, activity and lifestyle habits tend to occur. The risk of being obese increases especially if one parent or more is obese. - Age: Obesity is no respecter of age. It is in fact projected to be a major mental health concern by the year 2020 especially in children. However, as you grow older and undergo hormonal changes and less exercise, the risk of obesity increases. -Other risk factors for obesity include: unhealthy diet and eating habits, certain prescription medications, medical conditions and syndromes, pregnancy and lack of sleep.
