The conservation of our beautiful island is being promoted through art! Its a timeline of life here on Catalina... Here are some pics of the art at the Airport in the Sky that is being done by myself and Tom Plonka! Check out the pics- it takes us back 7,000 years to a family of Tongva indians and brings us to current times. Its an educational piece of art, with the purpose of promoting the work that the Conservancy does to keep this island in its natural beauty. I just want to commend everyone who is honoring the memory of a loved one who was depicted in the artwork that was at the airport prior to this new installation, Vern, while maintaining respect for a living local, myself. I also want to show my appreciation for those people who didnt assume that Verns memory would be excluded from the mural currently being installed as was necessary due to the fact that the old artwork was literally falling apart. As the artist Im not privy to all information regarding the original painting of Vern, but as far as Im told he is now in the safe and loving hands of family members. Thanks to everyone who is willing to support my art and more importantly the conservation of our beautiful home, Catalina, as this is truly the purpose behind having any artwork at all up at the airport. I love this island, it has my heart and if I can promote the island in any way to gain respect and honor from visitors, then my heart is warmed by the thought. Thank you to Vern and to all islanders who love this island. I love this community, this FAMILY and I hope that in the future locals and visitors alike understand the deepest respect I have for my island family. I would NEVER disregard or belittle a valued member and pillar of our family. Verns memory is not dishonored in this, it is honored in fact by maintaining and repairing the image representing the Tongva, to allow the original art to continue to be outside would have been the irresponsible thing to do. The original art was on wood, ten years old, and is now indoors where it will keep better and longer. I hope that when Im gone my memory is as cherished as that of Verns. Im happy for the opportunity to have his memory rekindled in the minds of those who love him through this process of change and transition.
