The continued existence of philosophy departments is a remnant of the medieval university, and much like theology, needs to be abolished. As philosophy has no subject matter of its own, but is a second-order discipline (whether it is aware of this or not), nor should it have an autonomous institutional existence in the university. The persistence of myriads of conceptual confusions within philosophy is partly a function of this institutional fact. One way to disrupt the reproduction of conceptual confusions is to abolish philosophy as an autonomous discipline within the university. The various subdisciplines (philosophies of this or that) can find homes in the sciences, serving the needed metatheoretical function within these sciences, while at the same time being firmly grounded in the theories and practices of the disciplines of which they are the metatheories. This would be a step toward unifying science, as it would make for better metatheory. Whatever remains that cannot find a home in the sciences can be abolished or dispersed among humanities departments.
