The controversial new deportation law at the centre of Naurus - TopicsExpress

The controversial new deportation law at the centre of Naurus judicial crisis could also be applied to asylum seekers sent there by Australia, the ABC understands. Naurus new magistrate on Tuesday presided over the governments first attempts to institute its draconian deportation law, which allows arbitrary expulsion with no legal recourse. Any potential for the law to be used in the cases of asylum seekers is a prospect that worries Human Rights Law Centre spokesman Daniel Webb. If the government of Nauru can summarily deport its chief magistrate, then presumably we should be deeply concerned that it would also, or could also, summarily deport asylum seekers, he said. Mr Webb says the Australian Government should stop transferring asylum seekers to Nauru until those people can be protected by a full judicial system. They should bring them back, because all that now stands between those asylum seekers and their wrongful return to persecution is the Nauru justice system.
