The cop cliche that they were in fear for their lives when they - TopicsExpress

The cop cliche that they were in fear for their lives when they resorted to deadly force against unarmed citizens is getting very old, but thanks to the internet, we can see just how common this cliche is used. The other cliche is that they had to kill or hurt an individual in order to protect that person or anybody else around from being killed. Another cliche they fall back on when it is revealed the victim was unarmed was that he tried to use his car as a weapon, which, of course, made them fear for their lives. But we are the ones who should be in fear for our lives when we come in contact with them because statistics show they are killing more unarmed citizens than they are getting killed by armed citizens. ***** Patrolman Michael Brelo told investigators that he feared for his life in the 30-second shoot-out in the parking lot of an East Cleveland middle school. He said he reacted to protect himself and other officers. Investigators said they never found a gun in the car, despite Brelos insistence that bullets were fired from inside of it. His partner, Moore, fired 19 shots at the vehicle. They fired the most shots of the officers involved in the shooting. Documents offer an explanation as to why Russell and Williams appeared to keep moving: Officers sprayed their bodies with bullets. Williams was struck 24 times, while Russell was hit 23 times. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiners office said they died of gunshots to the head, neck and torso. The manner of the deaths drew outrage nationally. But DAngelo, the attorney for the police union, and others urged prosecutors to realize what officers faced. As Brelos interview with investigators drew to a close, one officer in the interrogation asked him: Did you fear for your safety and the safety of other officers? The most Ive ever been in my life, sir, even in Iraq, Brelo said. Ive never been more afraid in my life, for me and my fellow officers, sir.
