The correct story is that autism DETECTION rates jump again. Bad journalism USA Today (as well as most media outlets covering this story.) The study didnt measure the actual rate of autism prevalence but rather measures the rate of DIAGNOSIS of autism. Two different things entirely. As awareness/education campaigns continue the fact that people are actually aware autism exists is the biggest contributer to the rise in autism rates. One might note that the rate of diagnosis for mental retardation has been on a similarly steep decline to match that of the rise in autism diagnosis rates.
