The costly and ineffective shark cull, Colin Barnetts pet policy, - TopicsExpress

The costly and ineffective shark cull, Colin Barnetts pet policy, was flawed from the beginning. Yesterday the Environmental Protection Authority recommended that the shark cull not continue this summer, stating a high degree of scientific uncertainty about impacts of the viability of the south-western white shark population. It’s been an expensive mess of Colin Barnett’s own making, I am pleased it’s over, but it has cost the taxpayers of Western Australia, it made our beaches less safe and it has caused wide spread community disruption. Its time we start addressing the real issues, by investing in more tagging, beach enclosures where appropriate, more surveillance and education, so sharks are identified and beach goers can be assured. That is the answer. More than 170 sharks were caught as part of the shark cull. Yet it failed to catch a single great white shark, the species that poses the highest threat. I offer bipartisan support to real measures that will help reduce the risk.
