The countries of France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States of America have issued the following statement: Libya is undergoing severe stresses as it strives to establish the foundations of a modern democratic state against challenges to its security, ongoing violence, and institutional weakness. The current conflict over Tripoli International Airport is further increasing division and mistrust among Libyans and undermining efforts to establish security and institutional coherence. We urge an immediate cessation of hostilities and resumption of political dialogue. In light of these challenges, however, we welcome today’s important announcement of the final results of Libya’s recent parliamentary elections. We commend the bravery of the Libyan people and the efforts of the High National Electoral Commission in ensuring their success. We urge the expeditious seating of the Council of Representatives to begin the important work of building political consensus amongst the Libyan people, while the essential work of the Constitutional Drafting Assembly continues. A constitution that protects the rights of all Libyans will lay the foundation on which to build a democratic, free, and prosperous Libya. We shall continue to work as committed partners with Libya’s elected representatives and government as they work to bring peace and stability to a country that has witnessed division and conflict for far too long. Ultimately, the hard work of forging political consensus rests with the Libyan people themselves. We again call on all sides to refrain from violence and to engage in meaningful and productive dialogue, mindful of the compromises that are part and parcel of the democratic process.
