The country celebrated its 65th Republic day today. The nation\s achievements in various fields and an impressive display of India\s military prowess remained the main attractions of the Republic Day Parade which was held at Rajpath in the national capital.Display of India\s first indigenously designed and developed Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and the Main Battle Tank -MK- 2, also known as Desert Ferrari for its excellent mobility, were the highlights of the parade.The well-turned out and synchronized military and police contingents marched to the tunes of bands through the Rajpath where President Pranab Mukherjee, took the salute.After the customary 21-gun salute and unfurling of the national tri-colour by the President Mr Mukherjee, the parade commenced.Before commencement of the parade, Sub Inspector K Prasad Babu of Andhra Pradesh\s counter-Maoist force was posthumously conferred the highest peacetime gallantry award Ashok Chakra. Babu was honored for an anti-Naxal operation.Minutes before the parade began, Prime Minister Dr. Singh led the nation in paying homage to the martyrs by laying wreaths at \Amar Jawan Jyoti\, an eternal flame in the memory of those who laid down their lives while defending the nation.The impressive march-past was watched by the Chief Guest, the Prime Minister of Japan, Mr Shinzo Abe, Vice President Md. Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister A K Antony, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and other dignitaries.Republic day was celebrated across the states and union terrotories with much enthusiasm.In Meghalaya ceremonial parade was held in the State Capital Shillong .In Punjab, state level Republic Day function was organised at Patiala, where Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil unfurled the tri-colour. Punjab Chief Minister unfurled the national flag at Ludhiana. In Haryana, the State Governor Jagannath Pahadia unfurled the National Flag and took salute of parde at a function in Gurgaon.Several religious and social organisations celebrated Republic Day at Magh Mela venue on the bank of Sangam in Allahabad.In Andhra Pradesh, Governor E.S.L. Narsimhan hoisted the national flag and took the salute at the main ceremonial parade held at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad.In Uttarakhand, the main function was held at the historic Parade Ground in Dehradun. Governor Dr. Aziz Qurashi unfurled the national flag and took salute at the parade.Peaceful and colourful Republic Day parades in Kashmir marked celebrations of Republic Day. AIR correspondent reports that main function was held at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar. State Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar unfurled the tri-colour.Reports of Republic day celebrations are also pouring in from neighbouring Nepal, Sri Lanka, China.
