The current state of American internal politics, for those who want a refresher; President Obama and his Democratic Party risk losing the Senate (their controlled Chamber of Congress) to the Republicans in Novembers elections. This is a result less so of Republican efforts but rather a backlash against perceived Democratic incompetence. It is also due to the extreme difficulty Democrats face in holding onto unconventional, hard-to-sustain electoral gains made on the coattails of Obamas epic 2008 election. As it stands, the Republicans would have to run some really stupid candidates to lose their majority in the House of Representatives (Republicans therefore must promote general electability not ideological purity) and are looking more and more likely to take back the Senate. If the latter happens, Barack Obamas last two years will either be interestingly different or conflictingly awkward.
