The curse and blessing about doing film: You realize that once - TopicsExpress

The curse and blessing about doing film: You realize that once you get a budget you have opportunities to make choices that satisfy your personal geekiness. One has to be careful however. When we were in pre-production of Paranormalice, there was a bird-dog (guy who fetches money, investors) who brought to my co-producers attention that we could get X amount of dollars likely if wed cast a moderate horror icon in a cameo or bit part role. I submitted a list of the entire cast of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But immediately realized this wasnt exactly a good casting decision as much as it was because I wanted to meet the entire cast of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In early conversations about Confessions of a Graverobber, I told my co-producer I wanted Kevin Conroy (who actually is an outstanding actor) to be in one of my smaller roles, because he voiced Batman and I could say to myself I worked with Batman. Obviously we werent going to be able to afford Christian Bale, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, or George Clooney and I really couldnt care less about Adam West. Also likely none of them were going to take a minor role in an Alabama indie project even if we could pay triple their usual salary. The problem that was so glaring even I saw it and attempted to ignore it, was that Conroy didnt fit the role physically at all. So you have to check your geek-meter with your ego with your projects worthiness, etc, etc. Still it is cool to be at very early stages when more things are discussed than ever happen like Lets get this into Justin Timberlakes hands, knowing full well the likelihood that we get something into his agents hands is slim to none and the idea that we get it to him beyond that is none to none. But these conversations are fun, they get really fun when you know the budget, know the potential, and know what you can seriously go after. The door appears to be open a little wider this time. Knock on wood, rabbits foot, toss salt over the shoulder, all of that... I made some geek picks in Paranormalice. They actually fit the roles, and I would never tell them who they are because you dont express fandom in professional situations but there were a handful of choices made because we had the luxury to do so. Thats a fun thing. So hopefully project two gets $50 million and then its a matter of keeping all the geekmeter stuff at a minimum.
