The dance alone is beautifully mesmerising, but add the fact that each lady performing is actually deaf, this piece takes on a whole new level of respect...... The ancient dance of the Thousand-Hand Guan Yin is named after the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, who is a compassionate being that watches over and protects people in the world who cry out for help. People like the deaf and disabled members of the Chinese Disabled People’s Art Troupe, who perform the optical illusion style dance in perfect form. All 63 members of the troupe who perform this incredibly difficult dance are deaf. In their homeland of China, there aren’t many career options for a deaf, lower class person, so the troupe gives them the unique opportunity to perform their hearts out. Feeling music through speakers and guided by hand gestures, these disabled female performers “endure pain and suffering in vigorous training, simply to deliver a message of love to mankind.” Aren’t they incredible?! This is a moving performance on it’s own, but the fact that each and every one of the dancers were able to express themselves in such an amazing way makes it that much greater. youtu.be/sTesehdHbqs
