The danger of dogmas lie in their tendency to serve as vicarious - TopicsExpress

The danger of dogmas lie in their tendency to serve as vicarious faith, as if all we had to do were to accept on authority a fixed set of principles without the necessity of searching for a way of faith. But dogmas, if they are to serve any purpose at all, should be a summary or an epitome of faith rather than a substitute for it. Not the confession of belief, but the active acceptance of the kingship of God and its order is the central demand of Christianity. Asserting I believe in . . . Will not make a person a Christian, just as asserting I believe in the United States of America Will not make a person an America. A citizen is he who accepts the allegiance to the Constitution, its rights and obligations. Thus our relation to God cannot be expressed in a belief but rather in the accepting of an order that determines all of life.
