The day started out great but ended with a potential heartbreaker. Jim and I took the dogs to Davidson River Campground to do some biking and walking with friends. We were getting ready to leave when I heard something fall from a tree in our campsite. At first I thought it was an acorn but it made a big wump when it landed and then ran to a tree nearby. I walked over to the tree and there was a baby squirrel clinging to the tree about two feet up on the trunk. Then I heard its mama calling, but the little thing would not move. Its eyes were open and it was fully furred but its tail was skinny. We waited a bit to see what would happen and then i got on my bike to ride to where I could get a cell phone signal to find out from some rehabbers what I should do. They said I should get the baby and take it home. Both rehabbers offered to get it but one is much closer to me and could get it tonight. I have given all my cages to rehabbers in the area and it was too late to get formula from a vet. About then Jim rode up and said that the mom came down the tree to find the baby. He said she was obviously a young squirrel herself - probably first litter. She grabbed the baby and took him a few feet up the tree and then she dropped him. He fell to the ground and she came down and grabbed him by his scruff and ran into the bushes. We could not find any sign of either of them and i worry that he is injured or that she is not big/strong enough to get him back up the tree. The nest is very high up. We are going back tomorrow too look around, but I am heartsick about this.. He - or she - was adorable like all baby squirrels are
