The Union Miles Outdoor Learning Gardens; which we also refer to as “outdoor classrooms” will leverage the use of vacant land-based learning across the curriculum to teach youth and return citizens aspects of horticulture and market farming. The learning objectives and curriculum will be related to 1) Edible Gardens: includes raised and in-ground beds growing a wide range of edible seasonal crops, 2) Hoop Houses: enclosed spaces that allow for year-round growing and activities; 3)Greening Projects: includes tree planting, variety of bushes & shrubs, beautification projects with art murals & displays, and flower plantings; 4) Storm water: Includes features that capture rainwater such as rain barrels, rain gardens, ponds, and replacing impermeable surfaces with permeable surfaces; 5) Pollinator/Butterfly Garden: Includes plants that attract pollinators such as butterflies and bees; 6)Wildlife Habitat Garden: Includes features that attract wildlife such as forests, birdhouses, and 7) Native Gardens: includes plants and flowers native to Northeast Ohio. The classrooms will be available to youth and return citizens with a primary focus on low-moderate income individuals, the re-entry population, senior citizens, and veterans. Union Miles neighborhood has an estimate 162,717 households; and the neighborhood is a food desert, lacking healthy foods for its citizens. 36% of the population is below the poverty level. The community is making improvements towards revitalization by making use vacant land. Union Miles has an estimate of 1,623 vacant lots that will be used for Outdoor Learning Gardens, Agriculture Incubators, and Historical Art Placements. Through the Outdoor Learning Gardens we will provide sustainable educational modules via the curriculum, healthy fruit and vegetables for the participants, community beautification via vacant land re-use, tools for self-sufficiency via market farming, and per our business collaborations create internship and employment opportunities. Through our partnership with the Botanical Gardens and the Cleveland Metro School District citizens will learn how to grow food in their own community, and eat from it, brining healthy foods back to into the neighborhood. Up to five vacant lots will be used for the outdoor classrooms; and more vacant lots will be added annually. Union Miles is home to a historical log cabin built in 1908; and this site with its spacious connected vacant land will also be utilized for outdoor classrooms with an herb garden component. We are in the pre-planning stages of educating youth how to plant pumpkin seeds; and then the youth will be educated how to carve the pumpkins, create pumpkin deserts, and how to roast pumpkins seeds. Youth have the option to take their carved pumpkins home or they will be used to decorate the log cabin during the autumn/fall season. *City of Cleveland has an estimate $162,717 households.
