The death of John Land on the same day as Kennedy really strikes me as the end of an era...in Orange County and the nation. Land was a young man when Kennedy was young, in fact he was three years or more younger. John Land was part of the generation which, after Kennedy, bridged the old South and the new South. He grew up in an entirely racist community and overcame it, I think, even if many in Apopka did not. His concern for his community was also emblematic of the sort of civic activist we really need all over this area. Willing to focus on conditions locally and not pine for higher office. I will miss this good man, despite our many areas of difference. He represented much that I admire.
