The death of Robin Williams reminds me of how many people in my life struggle with depression, including myself. Every day we pass people on the street and smile. Everyday we exchange the routine how are yous. We race away from each other before we can reply truthfully, instead throwing a superficial cheerful answer in the wind. What if we stopped and shared how we are truly feeling in that moment. We are stressed, lonely, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, restless, sad, angry. We are all of these things yet we rarely admit them to each other. We dont want to burden people. We exert so much energy pretending to be okay all of the time that we rarely ever allow ourselves to be authentically human. To stop and answer that how are you with the truth, and to allow the other person the chance to share a brief connection, if only a moment, of reassurance that they are not alone. You are not alone.
