The death of a man found in Wills Creek is ruled accidental. At 3:15 pm this afternoon the Cumberland Fire Department and Cumberland Police Department responded to the area of Will’s Creek and the Potomac River for a report of a person in the water. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the body of a deceased male in the water under the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Bridge. Preliminary investigation revealed that the person had apparently been walking on the railroad bridge above when he fell through the bridge causing his death. No foul play is suspected at this time. The identity of the deceased subject is being withheld pending notification of the family. Responding to this incident was the Cumberland Police Department, Cumberland Fire Department, Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit, Natural Resources Police, Allegany County Water Rescue Team, Ridgeley Police Department, and the West Virginia State Police. The Cumberland Police would like to remind the public that trespassing on all railroad property is dangerous and illegal. Railroad bridges are not meant to be used for pedestrian traffic and often have many hazards. For your safety, please stay clear of all railroad property.
