The deaths of a large number of sheep on an Australian export ship in September last year is distressing, and the government takes all such reports on animal welfare issues seriously. Industry reported that the particular incident was a highly unusual and unexpected incident and it has been almost two years since there was a similar incident of this size. The Department of Agriculture will continue to manage the risks associated with the export of livestock from export supply chains and investigate reported incidents. The government will continue to support livestock exports because it is an important, ongoing trade for Australia that contributes significantly to the economy, especially in the Northern Territory cattle industry and our relationship with Indonesia.
