The debate on the New IITs and IIMs got the following thought to my mind. Views anybody? There is no shortage of Engineering / MBA institutes. Personally, if you want that brand, you can surely rebrand the better institutes. IIT Roorkee was just REC Roorkee when we were studying. We have so many NITs. Let us bring them under the IIT umbrella, if that is what we want. Wont that save a lot of money? But that was not the concept I think when the IITs were started. The idea was, (I think) to have an institution that nurtures the best talent in the country. When you create so many IITs, the teaching pool may get diluted (And you all know what you think of most of your teachers ) Which makes the creation of institutions like this self defeating, apart from expensive. The MBA educational situation is perhaps not as elaborate as the engineering one. But maybe some similar model could be applicable.
