The debut of Tea Leoni’s new CBS series, “Madam Secretary.” - TopicsExpress

The debut of Tea Leoni’s new CBS series, “Madam Secretary.” She’s the Secretary of State. The President is her friend. (They are so chummy she doesn’t even stand when the Commander In Chief enters or leaves the room.) Syria is our enemy. Hostages are in jeopardy. Conspiracies (deadly conspiracies!) are afoot. She solves impossible problems at a State Dinner. It reminds me not at all of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, despite a lot of conservative charges that “Madam” is liberal propaganda to “improve” Mrs. Clinton’s image in preparation for her expected presidential run—two years from now. I like Tea Leoni a lot, as an actress and a person. Her show is, well—not “Homeland.” But with only one episode in, it’s difficult to judge how it’ll unfold. “Madam” is not more unrealistic than a lot shows on TV and there are worse ways to spend an hour than watching the lovely Miss Leoni save the world. “Madam Secretary” has the great advantage of being the lead-in to CBS’s big hit “The Good Wife” which had its season premiere Sunday. Some people were saying “TGW” lost its way last season. I was not among these critics and after watching the first new episode—which combined all the wit and smarts the show is famous for, along with a surprisingly taut and gritty new vibe—I’d say this masterpiece has been rejuvenated. I hadn’t thought it needed any goosing up. It’s been a favorite of mine right from the start.
