The decision by the Federal Government to refuse funding for secular youth workers (who may, of course, be religious believers) in schools, but fund only chaplains nominated by designated religious organisations, is indefensible (Chaplains get the nod over youth workers, October 11-12). Apart from constituting enforcement of religion on secular institutions, this runs directly counter to statements by the government on increased autonomy for schools.
