The demand for Rhino Horn in the use of traditional Eastern Medicine is placing fatal pressure on Rhino population around the world. Economists estimate that game farmers in South Africa have accumulated over twenty tons of legally harvested rhino horn in their efforts to deter poachers from their properties. At current rates of consumption, this quantity would supply 5 years of demand, giving the rhino population its long overdue break from the slaughter. If rhino horn harvesting is legalized, the current populations in South Africa would have time to recover while simultaneously supplying future demand. In an ideal world, demand for rhino horn would not exist, but thousands and thousands of years of Traditional Eastern Medicine practices will not disappear overnight unlike the rhino. Unless something is done immediately, at current rates of slaughter all rhino will soon cease to exist on earth. Grace Borgeson a part owner of the game farm and author of the childrens book, Douwlina - A Rhinos Story, the true of story of a female rhino who was rescued as a baby in the Kruger Park after her mother was killed and who now lives on her farm. Douwlina now lives freely with the other wild rhino, but because she was raised by humans, she feels safe to walk up to people and unfortunately, this makes her more vulnerable to poaching. The demand for rhino horn can be met and supplied through legal means by farming rhino, and harvesting the horn which grows back.
