The demolition of the former Burnie hospital entailed the removal of a seven storey building consisting of a concrete encased frame with coffed concrete floor slabs , brick infill panels and aluminium windows . The dismantling of the structure was made more difficult by the hazardous materials (predominately asbestos) throughout the project and that the buildings were structurally compromised . A number of techniques to minimize the transfer of hazardous material were used , including : The complete encapsulation of the building with industrial fabric , dampening the site to reduce dust . Recycling the water used in the dampening process to reduce the likelihood of contaminated substances entering drainage systems . The demolition methodology utilized special excavators fitted with extended booms and hydraulic pulverising jaws . Enclosed and sealed semi- tippers were used to transport the material and a purpose built cell was created for its disposal . Hazell Bros was announced as joint winners of the 2004 Case Earth Award for Environmental Excellence Category Two in July 2004 for careful management of environmental risks during the demolition . Forward ten years and one wonders where the good practices used on the Burnie hospital disappeared when demolishing the old A.P.P.M buildings at Burnie .
