The difference is day and night! Many tourists make a mistake by choosing less expensive accommodations in Venice Mestre without understanding the difference. This is an industrial area requiring a half hour train to get to Venice Island. During the day the streets, canals and piazzas in Venice are jammed with tourists. In the evening the crowd thins and tourists leave the city. This is my favorite time of day in Venice. We stay less than I block from this vaporetta stop and travel up and down the Grand Canal on our multi-day passes or wander through the quiet streets.
