The difference that an ‘S’ makes in Communication: I came - TopicsExpress

The difference that an ‘S’ makes in Communication: I came across a blog by Dr. Michelle Mazur and was struck by the difference an ‘ S’ makes to the communication. Earlier, I never bothered to check Google on the same. The Wiki defined Communication as : Communication (from Latin commūnicāre, meaning to share) is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, written, or behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or more living creatures. I then Googled the word “Communications” and there were no results in the top three rows. Then companies ending with “Communications” started showing up. After going through several links and repeated search, what I got was this: Communications: The transmission of data from one computer to another, or from one device to another. A communications device, therefore, is any machine that assists data transmission. For example, modems, cables, and ports are all communications devices.Communications software refers to programs that make it possible to transmit data.( Source: webopedia/TERM/C/communications.html ). If the difference is so clear, why do we communication professional often use the extra ‘S’? I agree it is more rampant because none of us bother to sit back and correct our friends and families on the proper usage. At times, we also feel, an extra ‘S’ denotes we are adept at more than one communication field viz. PR, Advertising, marketing. But, does it not degrade our qualifications? Or the meaning of what we are trying to convey? Agreed that if a job description for a company writes “communications”, we are afraid to point it out to them just in case you might lose a chance of your hiring in a good organization but least we can do is, to take a stand on differentiating ourselves from the people who deals with cables, modems and ports as communication devices. I checked my resume for errors and thankfully there were none. How about you?
