The dirtiest Bank Square in Larkana Last month, a galaxy of Islamabad-based writers and intellectuals has had an opportunity to visit various remote towns and villages in the upper region in Sindh province. Upon their return, they expressed regret over the apathy, insensitivity and inactivity of the ruling elite and local administration to the plight of Larkana city. These writers and intellectuals were of the view that Larkana city has perhaps the dirtiest Bank Square, not only in the country, but also in the entire world, where one can find offices of, more or less, all public sector banks, domestic private banks and foreign banks among others, and also one can see heaps of garbage, pools of stagnant water, open-manholes, sewage flowing freely, the dirtiest road, a huge number of professional beggars, drug addicts, etc. The bigwigs of all these commercial and specialized banks can see easily the heaps of garbage from their glassy windows. They can feel the foul smell emitting from the dumps of garbage but they do not bother to make a little investment, hire sanitary workers and other staff to keep this one-furlong long Bank Square neat and clean, pollution- and garbage-free. It is a known fact that the banking sector plays a pivotal role in the socioeconomic and environmental development of a country but what ails, what stops the banking management to keep the Bank Square road and also the front of their offices spick and span in the Larkana city where piles of garbage line the Square/road. Against this dismal and dirty state of affairs, the Governor State Bank of Pakistan is requested to direct the heads of different commercial and specialized banks operating in Larkana city, especially those located in Bank Square/Bank Road to play their due role to keep the front of their offices as well as the road and its Bank Square neat and clean so that it may not remain an eyesore in this historic rich city. There is no excuse for lack of beautification of Bank Square year after year.dailytimes.pk/letters/24-Jan-2015/the-dirtiest-bank-square HASHIM ABRO
