The disaster of confusion vocations in pastoral ministry: Today - TopicsExpress

The disaster of confusion vocations in pastoral ministry: Today many congregations have adopted secular business models for the running of their churches. The pastor, some are saying, is the chief executive officer of the church-as-corporation. He has his corporate board (the board of elders) and his executive staff; the various specialized ‘ministries’ are answerable to an organizational chart. His workers are the laypeople of the congregation, who are organized into various task forces. What the company is selling is the Gospel, and the goal is to market the Church’s message to attract the religious consumers out in the world. The job of the pastor/C.E.O. is to administer the physical plant and the budget, set policy, be the visionary leader, and equip everyone under him for ministry. Business models can be great for buisnesses, and being a C.E.O. is a worthy calling in its sphere. But the Church is not a secular institution….vocations must not be confused with each other, and acting outside of one’s calling is a formula for disaster. Gene Veith
