The disciples had been with Jesus long enough to know that faith - TopicsExpress

The disciples had been with Jesus long enough to know that faith was important. He commended people for having great faith, He encouraged others to have faith, and He even rebuked those who lacked faith. So it comes as no surprise that the disciples asked Jesus how they could get more faith. Take note that they thought the real issue here was the amount of faith. But Jesus pointed out that faith’s value wasn’t a matter of amount. The Lord answered, “If you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May you be uprooted and thrown into the sea,’ and it would obey you!” (Luke 17:6) Faith’s greatness doesn’t depend on how much there is. Faith’s greatness depends on where it’s directed. You can have a huge amount of faith in an unreliable object. What’s needed isn’t a great amount of faith—what’s needed is a little faith in a great object, and there’s no greater object than God. Here’s the lesson both then and now: A disciple needs to invest their faith in God. Not in themselves, not in their financial advisor, not in their circumstances, not in their bank account, not in their friends and family, and not even in their pastor or their church. A disciple is someone who, at the end of the day, puts his faith in who God is and what He’s said. Period.
