The disciples may have imagined they would go out to preach, and the whole world would fall at their feet because the Messiah, the Prince of Peace they had awaited for so long, had finally arrived. They were experiencing this euphoria of being with Him, confident that everybody else would respond the sane way and Christs wonderful, peqceful kingdom was just around the corner. But that wasnt the true picture. So the Lord told them, “Dont be under illusions about My coming now to bring peace. Ive come not to send peace, but a sword.” This idea expressed here sounds as if the Lords intention for coming was to bring conflict. Consequences are often expressed as if they were intensions, for in the ultimate sovereignty of God, they are. But here, Jesus described the direct result of His coming as if it were His deliberate intention. And this is a paradox, in a sense. The Lord was saying, “On the one hand, Im a prince of peace, but on the other hand, theres going to be war, represented by a sword.” —John MacArthur, “Lord In Our Lives: The Sword of Christ, (p21)”
