The distal tip of the current lava flow above the police/fire - TopicsExpress

The distal tip of the current lava flow above the police/fire stations is moving ever so slowly... its advance overnight was negligible. We observed one small surface flow at the margin, but movement was sluggish at best. It remains four-tenths of a mile from Hwy 130. The northern lobe, which had ignited brush fires near Ainaloa last week is still weakly active, but very sluggish, and not moving at all at the tip. However, there are many scattered breakouts upslope, notably a bit above the area where the north Ainaloa lobe broke away from the main flow. Surface activity near there was quite strong... this seems to be the area of most activity in the bottom two miles or so of the 13-14 mile long flow. The geothermal pad area upslope of the flow front was somewhat active, burning the forest in the same general area it has been for months, but much less so than even two weeks ago. Several miles downslope from the Pu`u `O`o vent, several strong outbreaks were captured by our cameras today. Trade winds have returned, as the plume of Pu`u `O`o was blowing strongly to the south.
