The distinction between sanity and insanity is narrower than a razor’s edge, sharper than a hound’s tooth, more agile than a mule deer. It is more elusive than the merest phantom. Perhaps it does not even exist; perhaps it is a phantom. --PHILIP K. DICK This is one of those movies that everybody have heard about but many never actually watched it. I was one of them, until yesterday. This is a more difficult movie than I anticipated. It is a 70s movie, the pace of the movie is very challenging if youre used to recent fast movies. This is Scorcese at his best. And theres something that was very insightful: you will finish this movie thinking this is just about loneliness, urban alienation, insanity. Think it another way: you, the viewer, is in the movie as well! You are actually Cybil Shepherds Betsy character. Think about it. You spend the most part of the movie either feeling pity for Robert De Niros Travis character and eventually even feeling disgusted by his increasing insanity path. But at the end, because of the relationship with Jodie Fosters Iris character and what he does, you actually cheer for Travis and finish the movie thinking good for him. Exactly how Betsy finishes it. And then you realize that its not Travis that went insane, its more likely that you are the insane one. And whos to say who is insane? Genius.
