The documentary ‘Paper Clips’ will be shown at the Saint John Synagogue on Monday, September 30th, at 7 p.m. The film is being presented as a lead up to a major fundraising luncheon being held on Friday, October 11, on behalf of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. The public is invited to view this award winning feature length documentary, which was released in 2004. V Paper Clips is being shown to help draw attention to the impact of the Holocaust, which guest speaker Sir Andrew Burns will speak about at the luncheon. The film focuses on events that began in 1998 in a small school in rural Tennessee. Three teachers came up with a project for the eighth grade class that would attempt to build tolerance and respect for diversity among their largely homogenous student body. As a result to the students collect 6 million paper clips; one for every Jew exterminated in Nazi death camps during WWII. Suffice it to say, the tiny community of Whitewell in Tennessee and its students would never be the same again. Sir Andrew is the first U.K. Envoy for post-Holocaust Issues and a former British High Commissioner to Canada and British ambassador to Israel was appointed in 2010. The topic will be, “Still Coping with the Consequences of the Holocaust.” Tickets for the film are available at the door in return for a free will offering. Tickets for the luncheon are $100 and available from the Greater Saint John Community Foundation or can be purchased at the Harbour Station box office.
