The documentary short that follows below, produced by Stanley Nelson and Laurens Grant, titled “Black Panthers Revisited,” explores what we, today, can learn from the Black Panther partyand in challenging police brutality and I should note that Nelson’s latest feature documentary “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution,” which promises to be a definitive portrait of the Black Panther Party – its rise and fall – premieres at the Sundance Film Festival this week, so this New York Times short film is likely in consideration of, and an extension of that. The feature film aims to paint a complete and accurate account of the revolutionary black nationalist organization. It should act as a reminder, as well as an education (especially for the uninitiated, unaware of those whose shoulders they stand on) andAs Nelson himself has said, the rise and fall of the Black Panther Party is a story “that hasn’t been told,” adding that, “the Panthers have been part of other films, or there have been stories about individual Panthers But there’s never been a really great movie about the Black Panther Party And in keeping with the documentary short film, the feature documentary will also look at the Party’s influence on how African Americans consider themselves today, especially in consideration of recent (and ongoing) collective action within communities nationwide, in response to multiple incidents of police brutality that led to fatalities. A key Panther practice was its monitoring of police officers, and challenges of police violence and the beauty in this is that we get to hear directly from those who lived this story – all sides – if only because many of them were quite young in the ‘60s and ‘70s, during the core Panther years, and are still very much alive to share their firsthand accounts. I’m looking forward to, not only seeing the film, but also to the conversation it will likely inspire. “The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” will make its world premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival this week, screening 5 times throughout the festival’s run. You’ll find screening times and locations below, for those of you who are going to the festival
