The dog spinning tradition has been kept for years in the village of Brodilovo, in south-eastern Bulgaria, at the beginning of March. It consists of a dog being suspended above water on a rope. The poor animal is turned multiple times in a specific direction to wind the rope, then released so it can quickly spin in the opposite direction as the ropes unwinds. At the end, the dogs fall into the water. This pagan ritual goes underway to prevent rabies and is included in the traditional Kukeri celebrations. In 2006, a series of mayors of Bulgarian villages situated on the Black Sea Coast have banned this ancient ritual, due to its violent nature. Nowadays, the ritual is performed exclusively in Brodilovo. We believe this ritual promotes violence and should not be carried out in 2014! We urge the local authorities to ban this stupid tradition immediately!
