The dogs and I had a great time at the Barn Hunt trials put on by NM K9 Events this past weekend. Remi easily passed the instinct test I put him in for practice Saturday, and earned the final leg he needed for his Novice Barn Hunt title Sunday morning. I didnt think he was ready to qualify in Open, but moved him up anyway, figuring it would be good practice. Remi amazed me by getting straight to work and locating both rats in 1:07 (faster than any of his Novice legs), even with the second rat hidden on top of a 3 high stack of straw bales! He won the large dog Open class, and took home a beautiful rosette for Open HIT. I think orange and brown are my new favorite colors! Blast was only entered in instinct this weekend, since I want him to have more confidence and a stronger indication when he finds the rat. I missed his indication on the correct tube Saturday, but Sunday he went directly to the correct tube, sniffed it, and looked at me as if to say, Well, Mom, this is it. Can I get my cookie? Not as obvious as Remis frantic scratching and tail wagging when he finds the tube with the rat, but definitely progress. Proud of my boys! Jen Burkizer drove out from Phoenix with her Kerry, Ziggy, and Airedale, Frankie, who both easily earned their RATN titles. I really enjoyed finally meeting Jen, who Ive only communicated with through email and Facebook up to now, and thinking that I really need to start looking at entering some events in Arizona. :-)
