The easiest way to think of entanglement is to think of an entangled quantum pair as being two sides of the same coin. Because they were created by the same event one side will be the counterpart of the other. So if you flip the coin and it comes up heads you know that the other side must be tails. This holds true even if the two sides of the coin are separated by an arbitrary distance in space and even time. This appears to violate the quantum edict that a quantum state cannot be predicted in advance but because you cannot predict the outcome of the first coin flip it actually verifies it.
