The eco monster of Alimuri, an 18,000 square metre concrete ruin - TopicsExpress

The eco monster of Alimuri, an 18,000 square metre concrete ruin of a former maxi hotel, was blasted to pieces near the Sorrento Coast, Italy on Sunday. It took 1,2000 microbursts, holding 60kg (132 pounds) of explosives each, but only a few seconds for the shell to crumble completely. Around 400 spectators watched the destruction from a boat specifically chartered by the municipality of Vico Equens. The debate over the demolition of the ruin first started 50 years ago, when a building permit for a luxury hotel was first granted in March 9, 1964. However the city administration changed, as did the ownership of the premises several times and a legal battle continued, with both sides blaming each other for delays. The demolition of the eco monster, which was not only considered an eyesore in the landscape but also a violation of the natural habitat, cost over half a million euros ($622,410).
