The electronic configuration of Ce with atomic number 58 is 1s2 - TopicsExpress

The electronic configuration of Ce with atomic number 58 is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s2 4p6 4d10 4f1 5s2 5p6 5d1 5f0 6s2 . I want to ask some questions. 1. Why didnt they fill up the 4f orbital directly as 4f2 even when they could? 2. Why did they distribute one each electron out of two in between 4f and 5d even when as per the law of chemistry 4f (4 plus 3 = lower energy comparitively) orbital and 5d ( 5 plus 2 = higher energy compared to 4f) orbital should have been 4f2 and 5d0 respectively? 3. Are there any exceptions in filling f orbital?
