The elephant in the West Bank - religious nationalism, removing settlements and civil war. The future of the settlements has a strong nationalistic, ideological and religious dimension. For some Greater Israel is based on Gods promise. Returning land is a non-negotiable. Peace with Palestinians and Arab neighbours is irrelevant. The land is sacred. It is important to acknowledge that many Israelis oppose withdrawal purely on pragmatic grounds such as security concerns. And that religious nationalism is not an issue. Nonetheless, according to The Voice of the People: Israeli Public Opinion on National Security 2012: Many Israelis are highly concerned about the possibility of serious clashes and great internal strife should the Israeli government decide on a major withdrawal from the West Bank.
