The emergence of factional electoral committees and the possibility of crisis envisage by the Ijaw National Congress (INC), which is the apex body of the Ijaws worldwide has culminate in the suspension of electoral activities of its youth arm of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State. It would be recalled that the election slated for August 10, 2013, to be held in Yenagoa has been suspended sequel to the timely intervention and directive of the leadership of Ijaw National Congress led by Senator Tari Sekibo, which was communicated to Governor Dickson in order to avert unforeseen crisis. It was on that premise that the government through a statement issued in Yenagoa, signed by the Commissioner for Culture and Ijaw National Affairs, Dr Felix Tuodolo lauded INC, the parent body of the IYC on its position and subsequent suspension the election by the governor, stressing that the stand of the INC would create a peaceful atmosphere for a credible, free and fair elections when a future date would be announced for the election. The statement reads: Government wishes to reiterate that it has no interest in the politics of the IYC neither is government interested in any particular aspirant. All aspirants are Ijaws, therefore, government wishes all of them the best in their aspirations to serve the Ijaw nation. The document cautioned all aspirants not to play politics with the Ijaw struggle by politicising the IYC. The IYC is a struggle platform of the Ijaw people and not a political organisation. Therefore, if anyone wishes to play politics, such persons are advised to join the existing political parties. In this same light, we wish to also caution anyone intending to hijack the IYC to foster their selfish interest to desist and stay away from the IYC. Such persons do not mean well for the Ijaw nation. Ijaw youths should avoid and reject all these deceitful and selfish persons and practices. Tuodolo called on all Ijaw youths to be calm, peaceful and cooperate with the INC, and advised the Ijaw youths to turn out and vote wisely in order to install leaders that will be selfless, committed and loyal to the aspirations of our people when a future date is announced for the IYC election. To this end, he was emphatic that the decision was in the best interest of the IYC, and noted that Governor Dickson appreciates the role of the INC, just as he (the governor) wishes the IYC and INC well in their crusade to defend and promote ijaw affairs within the country and abroad.
