The empathy gap described here is especially powerful when white Americans look at their fellow black citizens, and helps explain why our acceptance of inequality is strongest when it comes to racial inequality. Of course, it isnt all truly about a lack of empathy. Part of it is simply a lack of understanding: so many Americans genuinely cant understand how the poor, or the jobless, or those with a disability or facing discrimination or other hardship, can so easily manifest health problems or have family issues or other difficulties that are much easier to avoid with a bit more income or stability or networks of support.
