The encouraging and comforting qualities we may find in a book have been succinctly captured by E.B. White: A library is a good place to go when you feel unhappy, for there, in a book, you may find encouragement and comfort. A library is a good place to go when you feel bewildered or undecided, for there, in a book, you may find your question answered. Books are good company, in sad and happy times, for books are people -people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book. Books not only keep people alive, they confer life unto us, for when our minds are actively engaged in translating the abstract symbols that comprise a book into moving images, scenes and narratives, our minds are active and alive. This is something the passive consumption of images cannot do. May Allah bless us to remain part of a community of readers. His command to His Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, and by extension, all of us, to read, was not issued in vain. IZS
