The end is in sight! Do those words excite and inspire you? We often use this phrase to encourage one another: college students as finals week draws to a close, high school seniors as graduation approaches, runners rounding the last turn in a race, patients wrapping up a long treatment, aging workers as retirement beckons and even daily workers as their shift comes to a close. When the road has been long or the terrain has been rough, when the days are wearying or the struggle seems unending, that phrase is like a breath of fresh air. It brings hope and encourages us to press on because we’re almost there! Did you know that the liturgical (church) calendar begins with Advent and ends in November? The liturgical calendar keeps track of church holidays and seasons such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. Some churches still follow this calendar for their weekly scripture readings (known as a lectionary) and what is interesting to note is that most of these emphasize the Kingdom of God and the end times during the month of November. How fitting, then, that it is during November as the liturgical year comes to a close and we look towards Advent, that we are also wrapping up our Route 66: Road Trip Through The Bible? We’ll pick up Jude for a week and spend two more weeks with the Elder John and then the road will come to an end with the book of Revelation! We can then echo both the prophets of old and John in Revelation with our Advent cry of “Come quickly, Lord Jesus!” Indeed, the end is in sight! Let us breathe in that fresh hope and press forward to finish well, becoming a people loving God, loving people and serving people!
